Google's tools allow for a means by which the entire class can be involved in an activity. Shared documents provide instant feedback and give them the creativity to make their own connections in the learning process. Allowing flexibility in how they respond opens the door to independent learning. There is also freedom in the types of responses that can be accepted, as well as giving them the tools for planning for cooperative work.

Wrap-up and Review (and even a chance at extra credit)
Congratulations on finishing this chapter in chemistry! Take advantage again of the valuable shared documents that we have created, especially this study guide
Ionic and covalent bonds are a part of our daily life- from the formation of DNA (covalent bonds) to adding salt (ionic) to your food to enhance the flavor. All of these processes are governed by very simple rules. Atoms must gain a full octet of electrons, and the sum of the charges must equal zero. This simple system shows the simplicity and elegance of creation, yet allows for massive diversity and endless possibilities. This knowledge not only gives you a glimpse at God's creation, it also allows you to use that same creativity to faithfully examine His creation and appreciate just how blessed you are!
I also want to give you a chance at this little easter egg if you have bothered to look this far in this wikispace....extra credit!
For 10 points of extra credit, take one of the day's topics and prepare a voicethread that serves as a review of that topic. Include at least 4 pictures or animations, 2 comments, and of course....your voice. Explore your options at voicethread.com and add your own flair to a unique product. I found the app to be easiest to use on my iPad, but you can be creative in your own way! Below is an example that I have done. Please consult me before you start. You do not have to use video. Good luck!

There are many vocabulary terms and key concepts that are vital for understanding in this chapter. Your job today is to create a study guide that can be used by anyone in the class that will help to learn or review all of the concepts that we have gone through. You will be adding 4 things PER PERSON to THIS DOCUMENT: 2 concepts that you think are vital to the understanding of this chapter, and 2 vocabulary term with a proper definition.

Study! Take advantage of the vast amount of information from you and your classmates and enjoy studying. Review videos from previous lessons, use the interactive practices, review the documents that we have created as a class. The test date will be announced at the end of this section.

One of the questions that I had asked you to keep track of before we started this lesson was an appreciation of being "fearfully and wonderfully made." Please compile a list of 2 or 3 facts or concepts that really made you think of the tremendous order that God has put into this world of ours. We will use this as an in-class discussion the day after our test.

Introduction to the unit/project
Rationale
Bonding is what holds the world together. It gives us limitless possible combinations of compounds that give us new materials to enhance our lives. From the simplest of salt compounds to the most complex DNA molecule, we rely on bonding to hold everything together. In this lesson we will be exploring the types of bonds and their impact in our lives. We will apply what we know through collaborative projects, videos, and quizzes. Above all, we will gain an appreciation for the order of God's creation in the simplest of components- the atom.
Background
In previous lessons you have learned about the basic building blocks of the universe which are atoms. We have learned that they are made up of smaller, sub-atomic particles called protons, neutrons, and electrons. The combination of charges and particles give us unique elements that have unique numbers of protons. Protons and their positive charges are balanced by electrons with negative charges, while the neutrons just help hold everything together in the nucleus. So what is next?
We begin combining different atoms together into compounds. There are different ways to do this and depend on the type of atom and how many electrons it has, or needs.
Life-Connection
Some questions are necessary to remain focused on the important material in these lessons, the first of which I would like you to keep as an open discussion point. As this project is wrapped up, the student should be able to:
give a response to the awesome truth that you are "fearfully and wonderfully made?"
describe the different types of chemical bonds and the properties of each of them
use computer skills to collaborate and complete projects and give feedback to classmates
share documents online and on time
manage time and resources so that projects can be done well while utilizing the best available technology

Instructor Information
Matthew Sonntag: Teacher,Teacher at Arizona Lutheran Academy in Phoenix, Arizona. I am in my 15th year of teaching, and have only held my present call. Apart from Physical Science, I also teach Chemistry and sophomore religion (Israel's Divided Kingdom). I also coach JV football and JV baseball and serve on the technology committee.
I chose this lesson because of its immediate impact to learning. This topic is one that we are currently going through, and I feel like I could implement its use in limited ways in order to extend learning. I also feel that this chapter lends itself to visual and active learning processes and the Web 2.0 tools that are available make this happen in a way that can't be done with a book and worksheet class. Bonding is such an abstract concept that it lends itself to a multitude of tools: video, flash animations, cooperative learning assignments, online quizzes, and online tutorials. It is invaluable to have these tools with a simple click and allow for connections to the content to be made by the students. It provides innovative content and enables the students to be proactive in their studies, while being more efficient both in how they study and how they learn new and old material.
Your explanation of technology integration
The integration of technology is managed through simple steps that happen in a progression each day. A review of material from their textbook links to the content from a variety of videos that both review and extend known concepts. Online quizzes give a progress report to both the teacher and student, while other online quizzes allow them to take it as many times as it takes in order for mastery of concepts to happen. Vital to the success of these assignments is having the appropriate technology on hand- a computer workstation, iPad, or Chromebook will access and be able to use almost every activity equally.

How these tools/techniques will improve or differentiate the learner's experience
Google's tools allow for a means by which the entire class can be involved in an activity. There is also freedom in the types of responses that can be accepted, as well as giving them the tools for planning for cooperative work.
Special considerations or expectations that may go with certain technologies
There is a bit of a risk involved in having activities like these. The availability of these tools inside of the home is no guarantee, nor is the reliability of a network. Special consideration may need to be given for students that are not meeting deadlines or completing their part in a cooperative assignment so that it is not detrimental to the rest of the class.
