Day 4: Naming Ionic and Covalent Bonds

Introduction
We all appreciate our names- and they are pretty unique to us! There is no difference in chemistry when we assign 1 name to 1 specific compound. It avoids confusion and allows for scientists to share information with no worries about confusion. Today you will learn and practice the rules of chemical nomenclature of the simplest of compounds.

Steps to Completion (4)

1)

Pick one of your classmate's links from the document that we have been working on as a class found here: class google doc
  • Read the information in their link
  • Read the summary of their link
  • Post a question into the 4th column based on their summary or link. Add your name to the end of the question.
  • If their are none available- delete my question and name and make your own.

2)
Carefully go through this webpage, naming ionic and covalent compounts, which gives all of the rules of chemical nomenclature (naming). We will not be going over everything in this page. Rather, we will be covering binary ionic compounds and binary covalent molecules. Go through these two sections and take notes as necessary. After you feel you have mastered this material (read and re-read as necessary; take the quiz below. You may retake it as many times as you like, but the goal is to get 100% of them correct.

3) Watch these videos as an additional review of nomenclature- it may help for some to watch this in addition to the reading.

4) Take this quiz as many times as necessary so that you get 100% on it!
