Day 2: Covalent Bonding

Introduction
Materials/Resources

Goals for the day:
1) Explain the differences between ionic and covalent bonding.
2) Be able to draw lewis dot diagrams and understand valence electrons.
3) Use technology to further your learning.

Steps to Completion
Your reference for today is chapter 6 section 2 from your Physical Science books. As always, nothing beats reading and taking notes. These activities should serve to extend your learning!

1) Review with some interesting extensions to your learning, watch this video: Covalent Bonding

2) This Java program is one of the best that I have encountered. You will need to download the app onto a computer. (make sure Java is updated as well) You must talk to me today if you do not have access to a computer to complete this assignment!!!
Build a Molecule
Click to Run
covalent bonds
3) Now make some molecules! Practice making the simple molecules of water, carbon dioxide, and the diatomic molecules of hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. Hit the "3D" button next to the completed molecule and look at each ball and stick model.
4) Now you can get creative! Click the "larger molecule" tab and you can create hundreds of different molecules. If you successfully put together a molecule, it will automatically name it for you.

5) Through trial and error, or through some research, build a molecule. You will be adding it to a google doc listed below. You must do the following:
Add all of the following to this google doc: Covalent Molecules
  • Add your name to the first column
  • Name the molecule that you built in the second column.
  • In the third, take a screenshot or find a picture of the ball and stick model of your molecule (3D is best)
  • Research a primary use of the molecule and add to the fourth column. Add a link to the source of information.(insert tab, then link and add the URL)
  • Look over the rest of the class' molecules and pick one and find a secondary use for it. Use their source or find your own, but add it to the fifth column with a link.
  • Add your name to the right of your secondary use that you did. If there are an odd number of people, the last person will do mine.
